Notes from a British Freedom Rider

AUGUST MONTHLY MEETING HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM TUESDAY AUGUST 5TH TO MONDAY AUGUST 4TH.SEE RIDE SCHEDULE FOR DETAILS. Who Are The Red, White and Blue Freedom Riders? The Red, White and Blue Freedom Riders Motorcycle Club started with eight riders in March of 2002. The Club's founders were inspired to form the group after the events of 9/11 to support victims of that tragedy and other needy causes in Cape May County. One of our members, Gerry Grant, was instrumental in saving lives in New York City on that fateful day. Since then the club has grown to date with a membership of over 50 riders from all walks of life who have one other thing in common: they love to ride.    The club colors show an eagle holding a spoked motorcycle wheel, a police badge and a medical caduceus on the background of a firefighters’ emblem. RWBFR FOUNDER, retired firefighter, and past President Richard Sambenedetto promotes riding safety by offering a course for beginning riders instructing them in safe riding techniques.    You may ask, why would Cape May County need yet another motorcycle club? Well, here’s just a short list of county causes the club has already supported: In 2004, by raising money parading with Classic Cars and hosting their first annual Bike Wash, RWBFR raised enough funds to buy 20 brand-new bicycles at Christmas for needy children of the area for “Toys for Tots”. The club rode in costume, created and designed a float, and won numerous awards delighting children and families in our county parades in Cape May Court House, Wildwood, Cape May, and at the County Airport’s Haunted Hayride at Halloween and Christmas time. RWBFR’s won the most represented club award for their participation in the 2004 Annual Cape May County Benefit Motorcycle Poker Run For The Turtles, helping our county turtles cross the roads and supporting environmental conservation at the Wetlands Institute and in our community. RWBFR’s made an outreach to senior citizens at the Crest Haven Nursing Home, where residents (some who were former bikers) were delighted and excited to see riders and have asked us to return again this spring.    Our meetings are NOW held on the FIRST Tuesday of each month, and our recent monthly meetings have included speakers informing the club about different Cape May County causes being considered for support. RWBFR’s also just like to have fun, ride in numerous events, and hold regular Dessert Runs, enjoying the beauty of Cape May County and then a little ice cream after. All bikes welcome!
